A Clare government TD has expressed concern that allegations of fraud concerning Irish Aid funds in Uganda could undermine confidence in the State’s aid program.

Deputy Pat Breen, who is Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, has also welcomed the government’s decision to dispatch a team of auditors to the country.

Ireland gives around 33 million euro to Uganda each year, half of which is administered by the country’s government, but it’s now transpired that 4-million euro of this money has been lodged into an unauthorised bank account in the office of the Ugandan Prime Minister.

Deputy Breen says the matter is worrying.
