As the festive period officially begins in Ennis tonight, the town’s mayor has appealed to the people of Clare to shop local this Christmas.

Councillor Peter Considine will preside over this evening’s ceremony, which takes place in the marketplace from 5 o’clock.

The lights are being switched on earlier than usual this year following a suggestion from the business community – the town’s main streets will also be pedestrianised for four days prior to Christmas, and incentivised parking will also be in place.

Councillor Considine is hopeful the measures will lead to a fruitful and enjoyable Christmas for shoppers and traders alike
