Formal plans for Shannon Separation before Cabinet

Formal plans to separate Shannon Airport from the Dublin Airport Authority are expected to go before the cabinet today.

The Transport Minister Leo Varadkar is due to update his ministerial colleagues on progress for the future independence of Shannon, including the transfer of the responsibilities of Shannon Development to national agencies like Enterprise Ireland, the IDA and Failte Ireland.

It’s unclear whether any public announcements will be made today, but it’s expected that the separation of Shannon will proceed on a debt free basis, though the DAA will retain the profitable Aer Rianta International Duty Free Business in return for this debt write-off.

Today’s cabinet discussions pave the way for the appointment of a new management board at Shannon with plans for the development of an international aviation hub in the mid-west, and the promise of new jobs though airlines and local companies.
