A garda investigation’s underway into the discovery of a pipe bomb in East Clare.

The viable device was found during the search of a premises in Tulla yesterday and was made safe shortly after midnight.

Meanwhile, two men arrested in connection with the incident remain in garda custody.

The alarm was raised shortly after 7.30 yesterday evening when officers carrying out a search of a house in Tulla discovered the explosive device.

Officers sealed off the main street in the East Clare village and the Army Bomb Disposal Team were called in.

They made the viable device safe shortly after midnight and it will now undergo garda forensic examination.

The find was part of a follow up search by Gardaí after they had earlier stopped a car in the area and detained two men, aged 17 and 22 – on suspicion of drugs offences

They are currently being held at Killaloe Garda Station.

Its the second time in under a year that the Army has been called in to deal with suspicious devices in the Tulla area

Five improvised explosive devices were made safe after they were found at an isolated location on the outskirts of the town last January.
