The Deputy Mayor of Clare admits taking charge of the Westbury Housing Estates will put a strain on future County Council budgets but insists it was a necessary move.

From Monday the local authority will have responsibility foraddressing some of the long-standing major problems at the vast housing estate in South East Clare – such as water and sewerage -some of which date back to the 80’s

The situation then escalated with the collapse of the two development companies responsible for the upkeep of the estates – McInerney Homes and Chieftain Construction.

Following negotiations with the bondholders of the two companies a payment of 7 hundred and 15 thousand euro  will be used to remedy defective infrastructure, particularly waste water treatment infrastructure.

Deputy Mayor of Clare and Local Councillor Pascal Fitzgerald admits it will be a financial strain – but a necessary move.
