An Irishman is among a number of workers kidnapped by a group claiming to be al-Qaida at an oil plant in Algeria.

It’s understood the 36-year-old, from Northern Ireland, is among those taken captive this morning.

Armed Islamists attacked a bus carrying oil workers, killing one foreigner and wounding six people.

The group then headed to the workers’ base, taking an unknown number of them hostage, including foreigners.

French news agency AFP is reporting that a British citizen is among the fatalities.
