20 jobs have been lost with the closure a high-profile Ennis-based construction firm.

Brian McCarthy Contractors Ltd. has confirmed that it has ceased trading after over 30 years in operation.

During the building boom, Brian McCarthy Contractors Ltd. recorded revenues in excess of €70m and completed a number of high-profile projects including the 17-storey Clarion Hotel in Limerick and Glór in Ennis.

The firm, based at the Quin Road Business Park in Ennis, had been in operation for the past 36 years, and at one point employed 220 people.

However, a spokesman has confirmed that the company has now ceased trading and that a receiver will shortly be appointed.  The decision results in the loss of the 20 direct jobs that remained at the firm.

Losses have been recorded in each of the last two years, and the firm says the ‘difficult’ decision to close has been taken as it is no longer ‘viable to continue’ as there is ‘an insufficient workload to cover overheads.’

The spokesman added that Government awarding contracts to below cost tenders for public works “made it very difficult to continue”.
