More than a quarter of Clare homeowners liable for the septic tank charge have yet to register just two weeks before the deadline to do so.

New figures from the Department of the Environment show 73% of home-owners in the county who are believed to be liable for the payment have registered their domestic waste water treatment systems – this figure is higher than the national average of 60%, and is the second highest of any county in Ireland.

However, though the Local Government management agency has reported a surge in registrations, more than 5200 Clare residents have yet to sign up.

Those who have yet to do pay the now 50 euro charge can do so at their local authority office, by post or online at protectourwater.ie
