The Green Party has confirmed that Ennis Councillor Brian Meaney is leaving the party.

Councillor Meaney has yet to make any comment on his political future, or on reports that he may be joining the Fianna Fail party.

Green Leader Eamonn Ryan told Clare FM that it is with sadness and regret they note Brian Meaney’s decision to leave the party, describing him as a trojan worker and one of the most capable people in politics.

Eamonn Ryan declined invitations to speak on Clare FM, but did confirm the party will respect Councillor Meaney’s decision rather than asking him to reconsider.

Brian Meaney is one of just three County Councillors that survived the near wipe out of the Green Party in June 2009 – He’s their only elected representative in the West of Ireland and has been the party’s spokesman on Europe since the Green’s oireachtas representation was obliterated in the General Election of 2011.

The Barefield native, who resides in Darragh, represents the Ennis West Electoral area on Clare County Council and is also a member of Ennis Town Council.

Councillor Meaney is a founder member of the local Green Party, but Clare FM has learned he’s now applied for Fianna Fail membership.

The well known Ennis Councillor  – who’s also contested General Elections for the Greens in Clare-  has been unavailable for comment on the matter so far.

A spokesperson for Fianna Fail Headquarters has also declined to comment.
