Former Junior Minister charged with fraud offences

Former Junior Minister, and Fianna Fail TD, Ivor Callely has been arrested and charged with fraud.

The 54 year-old with an address at St Lawrences Road in Clontarf in Dublin is accused of making bogus claims for mobile phone expenses while a member of the Oireachtas.

At around half eleven this morning Ivor Callely arrived here at the Criminal Courts of Justice, Parkgate street driven in the back of red, unmarked Garda car.

Dublin District Court heard how the former Junior Minister was arrested by officers from the Garad bureau of Fraud investigation at his office in Killester this morning.

The former politician is accused of submitting fake invoices to the Houses of the Oireachtas to claim expenses for mobile phone handsets and accessories on dates between 2007 and 2009.

Garda Adrian Kelly told the Court the 54 year-old made no reply when read the six charges.

Ivor Callely spent just a few minutes in Court, sitting with his legs cross in the dock, glancing around the courtroom.

If convicted, he’s facing a maximum jail sentence of ten years.

He was released on bail and will appear again in court next week.
