A group of Consultant Psychiatrists say they are deeply concerned at the Government’s plan to legislate for the X-Case.

Around one third of the country’s 300 Consultant Psychiatrists say they believe it would mean legislating for suicidality.

They also insist there’s no basis in medical evidence that abortion is a treatment of suicidal ideation.

Members of the group briefed TDs and Senators on their concerns in Leinster House this morning.

Meanwhile the Tainaiste has rejected Irish Independent reports today that claim the draft abortion legislation does include plans for six doctors to approve a termination.

The paper claims it makes reference to plans for two sets of three doctors – but Eamon Gilmore insists the draft bill has yet to to be finalised.
