Shannon Airport Independence Questioned

Trade unions representing staff at Shannon Development and Shannon Airport have expressed doubts that an independent Shannon Airport will be a success.

Officials from the Airport and Clare County Council, business representatives and Oireachtas members have all appeared before a meeting of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, held as part of the process to draw up legislation on its future.

Trade Unions also spoke at the briefing, and said they are concerned that the project will ultimately fail, in spite of the recent return to growth in passenger numbers.

Sector organiser with SIPTU Owen Reidy says they have concerns about what this would mean for workers.

Businesses and the Airport itself are among those calling for Shannon to be given sufficient finances to compete with its European rivals.

CEO of the Shannon Airport Group Neil Pakey was among those seeking for an amendment to draft legislation to allow for credit of at least 100 million euro.
