Clare's Labour TD has revealed that he had to "bite the bullet" and dismiss a man who he had employed as a parliamentary assistant.

Michael McNamara has told an Employment Appeals Tribunal hearing in Ennis that he decided not to renew the probation period of Conor Daly in March of 2012, saying he was unhappy with his performance and that he had received complaints that Mr. Daly didn't appear interested in helping constituents.

After working on the Td's election campaign Mr. Daly had been given the position without interview, and with an annual salary of around 40,000 euro.

Mr. Daly claims he was unfairly dismissed, and that he was never given an opportunity to improve.

He'll give evidence when the hearing resumes in September.
