Two small schools in Clare have been successful in their attempts to retain their teacher numbers.

The announcement follows appeals by both bodies on the decision.

It had been expected that this September would see Labasheeda National School reduced to a one teacher unit while Moyasta was due to have two.

The change was down to a reduction in pupil numbers at both facilities.

In recent months the Minister for Education had told Clare FM that each school would be dealt with on a case by case basis.

The two had been raised in the Dáil by Fine Gael TD Pat Breen and the outcome follows a meeting of the Primary Schools Appeals Board.

Concerns had also been raised about possible health and safety issues if the reduction of staff had gone ahead.

Labasheeda will now have two teachers at the start of the new term while Moyasta will have three.
