Starting with gaa and it was a day of mixed fortunes for the county’s hurlers and footballers as they began their campaigns   in the  Waterford Crystal and McGrath cup’s

Ger O Loughlin tasted victory in his first outing with the county’s hurlers as he led the side to a 15 point to 1-9 win over W. I. T. In Meelick.

They led at half time by 7 points to 6.

Michael Mc Dermott was not as fortunate however as he saw his charges go down to a very strong Ucc side in Cooraclare by 12 points to 9.

The Banner got off to a great start and led by 4 points to no score by the 16th minute before Ucc fought back to score six times unanswered before the break.

Further scores from the students against a  tiring Clare side meant they march on as Clare bow out of the competition they won in 2008.

Elsewhere in rugby news Marcus Horan has made a successful comeback to the playing fields having lined out for Shannon in their AIB league win over Dolphin in Coonagh.

The Clonlara man had been out of action for the past 4 months following minor heart surgery.

He lined out at prop and could have an outside chance of figuring in the later stages of Munster’s Mganers league and Heniken cup campaigns.

Finally in athlethics news Rory Chesser continued his recent good form with a win at the Munster senior mens cross country championship today in Cork and Catahal O connor took silver in the Junior mens.
