This seven million euro investment in Shannon will focus on High Performance Computing in the Cloud for semiconductor design.

The project, which is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland, is the first ‘Cloud EDA’ R&D group to be established by Siemens Digital Industries Software globally.

It’s expected to create more than 25 new and highly impactful R&D roles in Shannon over the next three years, focused on delivering cutting edge cloud HPC environments for Siemens EDA workloads.

The Tánaiste & Minister for Enterprise Trade & Employment, Leo Varadkar says the investment really demonstrates the skill and reputation of the company’s existing staff here that such a significant investment would be made in such an area of importance for the company.

While in a statement to Clare FM, the VP of Engineering at Siemens, Joe Sawicki says the cloud represents a step change in capability for their EDA customers and harnessing its potential will be key for continued success.

Siemens EDA, formerly Mentor Graphics, has had a significant presence in Shannon for over 20 years, delivering key financial and business operations worldwide.

The Shannon operation of Siemens Digital Industries Software currently employs 150 people.

The rapidly expanding software R&D group is commencing recruiting for roles related to a multi-cloud hybrid PaaS/SaaS project including Cloud Infrastructure, Software Development, Application Security, DevOps, HPC & EDA.

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey says “the enterprising spirit that established Shannon as an international centre for manufacturing industry is now helping it evolve into a world leader in digital technology”.

He’s described the investment as the latest endorsement of Shannon’s status as a centre of excellence for High Performance Computing (HPC) and Cloud Software Development.

“Confirmation that Siemens Digital Industries Software will establish it first software research and development centre in Shannon comes just a week after the opening of the Future Mobility Campus Ireland (FMCI) test centre for mobility technologies on the Free Zone,

“Apart from the 25 new jobs that will be created over the next three years, the fact that the new facility will focus on HPC for semiconductor design helps underline Shannon’s reputation for world-class research and development in the digital technology sector”, ” Deputy Carey added.

Denis Curran, IDA Ireland’s Head of Property & Regional Development says “Siemens is a longstanding employer in the Mid-West region.

“The addition of this new R&D function and the associated transformational impact on the position of the Irish site within the global organisation is significant and I wish to congratulate Siemens on this expansion and wish them every success”.
