Homelessness In Midwest Up By Nearly 40% In A Year

The number of people recorded as homeless in the Midwest region has jumped by nearly 40 percent in the past year.

64 people throughout Clare are considered to be without a home as of August according to the Department of Housing.

The Department considers the Midwest region to cover Clare and Limerick for recording purposes.

There were 283 people across those counties documented as homeless in August 2021 – that’s jumped by 38 percent to 391 in the same month this year.

Around 40 percent of those without a home in this region are children, with 64 of the 85 families recorded as homeless considered single parent entities.

It comes as Clare County Council continues to report that the demand for its Homeless Action Team’s services is ‘unprecedented’ for this time of year.

While numbers in Clare are remaining relatively stagnant so far this year, the local authority says its emergency accommodation in this county is at capacity.

Only eight other counties – Dublin, Cork, Kildare, Meath, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and Kerry – have more homeless people than Clare according to the Department.
