Communities in Bloom was established in Canada in 1995 under the guidance of Tidy Towns of Ireland, Britain in Bloom and Villes et Villages Fleuris de France.

Now in its 29th year, the competition evaluates communities across the globe on the criteria of Community Appearance, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Tree Management, Landscape and Plant & Floral Displays.

Ennis has been chosen as Ireland’s nomination for this year’s edition and is competing in the International Challenge Medium category, along with Brooks Regional Alberta in Canada and Monfalcone Italy.

Over the past few days, the judges have been assessing the county town by visiting a number of locations including the Friary on Lower Abbey Street and the Parnell Street public realm enhancements.

Hungarian judge Dr Andrea Bosci says after experiencing the town this week, she believes it is in “very good hands”.

Having been crowned Ireland’s Tidiest Town in 2021 and Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre in 2022, Ennis is no stranger to accolades.

Ahead of the announcement of the competition’s results in late September, Senior Executive Officer of Ennis Municipal District Leonore O’Neill says the town would receive an economic and community pride boost from a victory.
