Following a weekend of jam packed sporting action we heard from Davy Fitzgerald as Clare lost their All Ireland Hurling title against Wexford on Saturday evening after losing in extra time by 2-25 to 2-22. Clare were reduced to 13 men with red cards for Brendan Bugler and Jack Browne, but an almost superhuman effort in the second half saw Clare come back from the dead to level the game. Colin Ryan's last gasp point from 65 metre free brought the game to extra time, but a Wexford goal at the end of the first period was the decisive score.   We also heard from Colm Collins as Clare beat Carlow by 4-26 to 2-13 in yesterday's Qualifier clash in Dr Cullen Park to qualify for the last 16 of the All Ireland Championship. The Banner led by 2-15 to 1-5 at half time, with the goals coming from Rory Donnelly and Shane Brennan. Clare registered another 2-11 in the second half, with goals by Podge Collins and Podge McMahon.  Clare now play Kildare at home in the third round of the Qualifiers, with fixture details to be confirmed by the GAA later.

NUI, Galway archaeology-diploma students are exploring the importance of ancestors in early medieval Ireland and helping to put a native Irish family back into the picture of medieval Ireland. The archaeology of medieval Ireland is dominated by the structures built by the intrusive Anglo-Normans, from the 12th century AD onwards – their earth and timber fortifications, large stone castles, towns and villages. Little is known of the archaeology of native families that dwelt in Ireland at the same time. Now, however, this is beginning to change, and adult students from NUI, Galway's evening diploma in archaeology are playing their part. Working alongside international students at the Caherconnell Archaeology Field School, the group are helping excavate a 10th to 17th-century AD settlement at Caherconnell in the Burren, Co. Clare.  Marian spoke to Michelle Comber of the Archaeology, NUI Galway to find out what exactly will be happening on the dig in the Burren.
