On this Friday’s edition of The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace was joined by his panel of three local contributors to discuss the major news events of the last seven days. Joe Queally from the RNLI, Rita McInerney from Ennis Chamber and Clare Champion Journalist Peter O’Connell were in studio to talk about all that happened in Clare and the country including; the annual teacher conferences and public sector pay talks.  In particular they spoke about the frosty reception Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn received from all three teacher unions. Secondary teachers subjected him to heckles and guffaws and a small walkout when he addressed their conference last Tuesday. He was also heckled by teachers holding red cards as he addressed the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation.

The panel also discussed the end of Declan Kidney’s career with the Irish Rugby team. The IRFU have begun the search for a new coach after announcing that Declan Kidney has been relieved of his duties as head coach. The Union have confirmed that they will not be renewing Kidney’s contract this summer. Assistant coach Les Kiss will take charge of the summer tour of North America, where he’ll be assisted by Gert Smal and Killaloe’s Anthony Foley.

Also up for discussion this afternoon was how an airline in Samoa, that’s started to charge by weight rather than by seat, says it could be the future of the industry. Samoa Air’s been weighing domestic passengers since November – but is now expanding the scheme to international fares. You pay, per kilogram, for you and your bags. The company thinks it’s a fairer system and will especially benefit families.

Racing Pundit Rupert Bell also joined Gavin for a preview of the Grand National tomorrow. Irish trainers are responsible for 12 of the 40 runners in tomorrow’s Grand National at Aintree making it one of the strongest ever raiding parties from across the Irish Sea to hit Liverpool in search of the biggest prize in steeple chasing.

Kevin McGillicuddy from Clare FM Sport also joined Gavin in studio for a preview of tonight’s Sideline View and a look ahead to the weekend sporting fixtures.

Also on today’s Friday Feature – stylist Tess Purcell was in studio for her monthly look at what trends are current and looked ahead to Summer styles and fashion.  She also discussed the different trends in cosmetics and make up. Colours in general will lighten for the Summer season, and indeed foundations.  Tess recommends using tinted moisturisers or BB (beauty balm) creams in the Summer for a lighter coverage. Strong lipstick colours, crimson for example, is also to the fore this season and suggests using contrasting colours i.e dark eye make up with paler lip colour and vice versa. She also talked about eye creams, lip plumping creams, maintaining healthy skin and complexion and much more.
