On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show, Phil Ni Sheaghda of the INMO discussed a new initiative from the group with Gavin Grace. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) have today launched a new initiative entitled “Ward Watch”. This new project will be published on a daily basis, in tandem with the long standing Trolley Watch, resulting in a new combined overall measure of hospital overcrowding. The Ward Watch findings will confirm that a number of hospitals are regularly overcrowding their inpatient wards.  This practice compromises the care of all patients on those wards due to an increased risk of cross infection and inadequate staffing while also minimising the dignity and privacy to these patients.

Michael O’Regan, Parliamentary Correspondent with the Irish Times also joined Gavin to talk about
How the introduction of water charges is likely to be delayed until 2015. The new tax had originally been scheduled to come into effect next year. But the Tanaiste and the Junior Finance Minister have indicated that the charge will now be postponed.

Bernard Purcell, Editor of the Irish World newspaper in London also spoke to Gavin today following the news that former British Prime Minister – Margaret Thatcher has died. According to her spokesman Lord Bell she died this morning from a stroke.

Paul Sweetnam is the Fundraising Manager with GIY – Grow It Yourself.  He joined the show to let listeners and interested groups know about the GIY Get Ireland Growing fund, which is in partnership with AIB’s Add More Green Fun. It is a new community growing initiative, to micro-fund a number of food growing projects around Ireland.  The fund is now open to applications from community groups, schools and not-for-profit initiatives seeking to develop growing projects.  Grants of between €500 and €5,000 are available.  For more details see http://www.giyireland.com/pages/getirelandgrowingfund

In today’s Calling Home feature we met Fiona O’Loughlin, who spoke to Gavin from New York. Fiona, from Ennis, has been living in New York for the past 2 years.  In her time there, she has been training and working as an actress, and hopes that will become her career.
