On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show, Gavin spoke with Mark Fielding, Chief Executive of ISME about how the cost of living fell 0.5% last month, but new CSO figures show an increase of 1.2% in the last year. There were increases in the cost of education, alcohol and cigarettes and goods and services while there were decreases in the cost of communications, furniture, household equipment, clothes and shoes. In light of these figures, ISME are calling on the government to tackle costs under their control, saying they continue to ‘cripple’ businesses throughout Ireland.  These costs, it’s claimed, are rising at a faster level then the CSO figures indicate.

Female driver jokes are about as popular as quips about blondes but despite the gag, women remain safer drivers. Ciara O’Kelly from Irish Country Living spoke to Gavin about the changes to car insurance that are impacting female drivers. With the new EU gender directive in place since January, insurance companies can no longer take gender into account when offering quotes. So as males see their premiums plummet, females are feeling the blow.

Miriam Judge is with CESI – Computers in Education Society of Ireland and was a guest of The Afternoon Show to discuss their annual conference which takes place in Galway this weekend. The theme for this year’s conference is CESI 4.0: Back to our Future. It’s their 40th anniversary. The Computers in Education Society of Ireland supports the development of methodologies that help to marry new technologies with a sound pedagogy. CESI promotes the practical implementation of ICT at school and classroom level.

Also on today’s show was another edition of “Calling Home” – where we speak to a Clare emigrant abroad about their new lives away from home.  Today Gavin spoke with Carl Walsh.  Carl is a Miltown Malbay native and has been living in Melbourne for the past 11 years. We want to hear your stories – if you or a loved one is abroad and would like to tell us how life is treating them in their new home please contact Clare FM on 065 682 8888, email [email protected] or see www.clare.fm

This afternoon Gavin also spoke with Rosemary Power, a Historian attached to NUI Galway about the next talk in the Hidden Clare series at the Clare Museum, Ennis, which is on Saturday 23rd February. Rosemary will speak on "Saint Senan and Scattery Island – looking at the sources".  It’s the first of three talks at the museum and Rosemary also has a book on Scattery Island coming out later this year.

Stephen McDermott our resident Clare FM Film Reviewer was also in studio to look ahead to the biggest film event of the year – the Academy Awards, which take place this Sunday night.  He’ll discuss nominations and who’s likely to win.
