On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace was joined by Chris Keena.  Chris is the Manager of HMV in the Crescent Shopping Centre in Limerick. A sit-in’s continuing at two HMV outlets in Limerick today, at Cruises Street and the Crescent Shopping Centre. Some 28 staff across the two stores remained at the two shops through Wednesday night after they were told by receivers, Deloitte, they were not getting paid. Staff were temporarily laid off while Deloitte assess the viability of the Irish operation. Security staff employed by Deloitte were denied access to the stores this morning.  Gavin also spoke with Nick Rabbitts, a journalist with the Limerick Leader about the UK company’s financial difficulties and the impact the closure of the Irish arm of the music retailer is having on staff.  They also discussed the support being offered to the Limerick staff from their neighbouring retailers and customers.

Patrick McElligott  is a Rainbow Development Worker at the  Red Ribbon Project and is a Sixmilebridge native. Rainbow at Red Ribbon Project are starting 2 new groups at the Red Ribbon Project, Cecil Street, Limerick.  The Youth group runs on Saturday mornings from 11 to12:30 and the Adult group will be on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:30pm. Following on from the previous success of MYLGBTS youth group for 13 to 25 year olds, they’ve now developed a new approach to LGBT support and awareness in the Mid West and the new groups will focus on mental well being and personal awareness of LGBT individuals. Dr. Roger Yates from Vegan Ireland also spoke to Gavin about the ongoing horsemeat controversy. Vegan Ireland’s reaction to the revelation that horse DNA has been found in some meat products is: what difference does it make? If people are willing to eat the flesh of other sentient animals, why the bother over the species? The answer is cultural. Horses are not generally seen as “food animals” – that is not the use we put them to. In Ireland, horses are associated with transportation and sport and not with burgers.

Brendan Walsh, an organiser of the Shannonside Winter Music Weekend also joined Gavin in studio along with local Sixmilebridge musicians Loughy (now based in Sweden) and Brendan Walsh Junior (now based in Switzerland). Sixmilebridge Folk Club hosts the annual Winter Music Weekend this weekend as it enters its 14th year. It promises to be the best yet with a wide variety of live music gigs and concerts scheduled over 4 days in Sixmilebridge and Bunratty. Loughy and Brendan also played a few tunes to highlight the diversity of music and genres that will be heard over the weekend from folk, traditional, bluegrass and Cajun.  For details see www.wmw.iw
