On The Afternoon Show today Gavin Grace spoke with Alan Jagoe, the National President of Macra na Feirme about land succession and the transfer of farms. Research on the future plans relating to farming and land ownership for farmers who don’t have an identified successor, was presented to farming interests and the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, this afternoon. . Macra na Feirme, the IFA, and the Dept of Agriculture commissioned the study. Land ownership and transfer remains a sensitive issue for farm families. However CSO figures show the numbers of farmers under 35 is just 6.2%, despite the fact that agricultural colleges are at full capacity.

Maeve Lewis, Executive Director of One in Four also joined Gavin on the show. The group today welcomed the decision by Judge Paul Carney to revoke bail in the case of Patrick O’Brien.  We sincerely hope that this decision in some way alleviates the distress of Fiona Doyle, who has spoken out so courageously about her experiences of sexual abuse.  Maeve Lewis says “The events of the past week highlight the difficulties experienced by victims of sexual crime when they engage with the criminal justice system”.

Sean Farrell of www.thescore.ie also joined the show to discuss the controversy about how a ball boy was kicked by a player. Chelsea say they’ll take action against Eden Hazard internally for kicking a ball boy in last night’s League Cup semi-final defeat to Swansea. The forward apologised after kicking the teenager, who was lying on the ball.

David Padden is a member of Eire Og Sevilla, a GAA team based in the Spanish city. Gaelic Football will be the unlikely source of entertainment for spectators at next Monday’s La Liga game between home side Sevilla FC and Granada. Members of the Éire Óg Sevilla club will partake in an exhibition match at half-time of the soccer tie in a first of its kind event for Spanish football.  He joined Gavin to talk about how the event came about.

Also on today’s show, Karen Maloney from Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation discussed the groups work and about an event taking place tonight. They are holding a free information evening on the famed ‘Camino de Santiago de Compostela’ on Thursday January 24th, at 8pm in Croí House, Moyola Lane, Newcastle, Galway.

Catherine Kealy also gave listeners the details of a meet and mingle social club for over 35’s, which has been running now for a number of weeks at the Templegate Hotel on Thursday nights – it’s free of charge and is a way for people in Ennis and around the county to meet people and socialise.
