On today’s Afternoon Show, the president of the Union of Students in Ireland outlined their plans to tackle youth unemployment. Joe O’Connor joined Máire Moynahan to talk about the groups proposals to assist students to find work in Ireland, which were launched today. The USI in conjunction with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and the Irish Second Level Students Union unveiled the plans, which are designed to end what it calls, the ‘lock-out’ of young people from the employment market in Ireland. Joe O’Connor, said today’s launch is aimed at developing a national jobs strategy for young people so they don’t have to emigrate to find work.

 

Edel Byrne is the Sli na Slainte Walking group co-ordinator with the Irish Heart Foundation and joined Máire to talk about how the charity is calling on people across the county to celebrate World Heart Day by holding their own Happy Heart Walk and being part of the biggest countrywide walking event of the year. This September as part of Irish Heart Month, the national charity fighting heart disease and stroke is urging families, communities and groups to organise a 5k Happy Heart Walk where they live and raise €1 for every kilometre walked to help turn 50,000km into €50,000. Also on today’s show Máire met with David Hehir, a Pro Wrestler from Clarecastle. David is currently training tirelessly to set foot in the ring with the stars of American Wrestling Entertainment and will make his homecoming appearance on Saturday next, September 7th at the West County Hotel at 7pm. Having had a lifelong ambition to get involved in the entertainment industry. David has worked hard over the last 2 years to achieve his goal with auditions for various roles now paying off to good success. Recently securing a small role in the upcoming series of TV show, “LOVE/HATE”. However, David’s new passion is to make it to the top of multi-million dollar entertainment industry that is Professional Wrestling.

 

Niamh Hickey is an Artist from Clarecastle and was in studio to talk about her new exhibition ‘The West’s Awake’, which is a collection of paintings that have been inspired by the Loop Head peninsula. Niamh spent her summers in the area and it was here she developed a love for this particular windswept and wild landscape. Niamh will launch her exhibition on Saturday 7th September at 12 noon in Culturlann Sweeney in Kilkee. All are welcome. It will be on view during September during library opening hours.

 

Tim Thompson is an organiser of the Crotty Galvin Traditional Music Weekend in Moyasta and spoke about how the annual festival has plenty to keep you entertained over the weekend with music sessions, ceili’s, dancing and lessons. The weekend is a highlight on the traditional music calendar of events in the county and for the weekend that’s in it – the All Ireland Final will be shown at it.
