On today’s show Máire spoke with Dr. Marian Faughnan, Chief Specialist in Nutritionist at Safefood. As part of the campaign to take on childhood obesity, Safefood is urging parents to ‘Bring Back Play’ and encourage their children to be more active every day. At present, 4 out of 5 Irish children¹ do not meet the physical activity guideline of being active for at least 60 minutes a day.  The latest advertising for the campaign is emphasising the value of including physical activity whenever families can, and that all activity adds up towards the recommended 60 minutes a day for children. Niamh Dinan from the Dinan School of Ballet in Clarecastle also spoke to the show following great success for her dancers at the weekend. On Sunday, 16 Clare dancers took part in the All Ireland IDTA Dance Competitions.  Over 20 trophies and medals won to children from 6 – 17yrs old, 9 1st place, 6 2nd place, 5 3rd place and 25 medals were awarded to the local dancers. Established in 1987, their students have performed with the Ukrainian State Ballet and the Ellen Kent Opera Company, the Royal Academy of Dance and the Galway Arts Festival and have made numerous television appearances. Niamh was also the recipient of this year’s National Dance Teacher of the year award.

Brian Kavanagh from Kilkishen also told us about the 4th annual Clare Diecast Model and Toy Show, which returns to the county on Sunday April 6th in Tracey’s West County Hotel Ennis. On the day there will be plenty to see and buy from trucks, plant, farm vehicles, cars, trains, planes etc. There will also be DVDs, T-shirts, jackets, dolls houses plus much more. Entry is only €5 while under 14s go free, so this promises to be a cheap, fun, family day. Outside the venue some local hauliers will display their real trucks and there will be tractors and cars also on show. Inside the hotel, watch out for the remote control trucks and cars being driven around. This event is supporting the Help Emma Beat It fund and there will be a monster raffle for the cause on the day.
