On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Máire Moynahan spoke with “Karen”. The annual 16 days of Action against violence against women campaign – ends today. The global campaign aims to raise awareness of domestic abuse and combat it. The final today of the campaign – today coincides with International Human Rights Day. Karen (name changed to preserve anonymity) recounted her personal story of domestic abuse.  A native of the US Karen and her kids have been living in Clare for a number of years and she now works as a volunteer with Clare Haven Services. She hopes her story will help other women who may be experiencing abuse to seek help and support. Denise Dunne, Director of Services at Clare Haven also discussed the services on offer locally. Bernard Purcell, Editor of The Irish World Newspaper in London also joined Maire and discussed the main news stories affecting the Irish in the UK – including tributes to Mandela, the death of Irish emigrant Helena Farrell, who suffered bullying because of her red hair and the G8 Dementia Summit in London.

 

Richard Collins from the West Clare Currach Club spoke to The Afternoon Show about how next Sunday from 2 – 5pm, they will have a gathering of people interested in building a 5 hand currach at Ned’s Shed Querrin as they complete the first stage under the guidance of James Madigan.  As a fundraiser they will be selling drawings of Cully Marrinan’s Currach, which was built over 50 years ago when he was 92.  This currach is in Kilkee, staged behind the boathouse and owned by the Harte family. Criostoir Mc Cartaigh editor of traditional boats of Ireland will give an overview on the day of these unique Irish boats and also the strong connection between Dingle peninsula and Loophead. Marianne Slevin, a Doolin based Artist and member of Ground Up Artist Collective also joined the show and told us about her Donation Art Sale Exhibition on at The Guru Teahouse in Ennistymon. Marianne will feature a selection of her work and people are invited to view and purchase the works by giving a private donation of how much they feel the painting they want is worth. The Sale will run from 9.30 to 6pm from Thursday 12th December to Saturday 14th December and from 9.30 to 4pm on Sunday 15th.
