On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace spoke with Lucy Masterson, Co-Founder of Hireland. Hireland, the initiative which urges companies in Ireland to hire people in their ones and twos helped 4,000 people to find jobs in 2012. Launching their campaign for 2013, the grassroots initiative, which is run on a voluntary basis, got over 6,000 jobs ‘pledges’ from over 1,400 companies. Lucy Masterson believes that small and medium enterprises (SME’s) have become more willing to hire additional staff. For more details on the initiative please visit www.hireland.ie

Music Journalist with Hot Press – Stuart Clarke, also joined the show to discuss today’s news that HMV has confirmed that it is to appoint an administrator. The move will put around 4,350 jobs (300 of them Irish) at risk. Company bosses were in crisis talks last night and announced this morning that Deloitte will be appointed as the company’s administrator. All of its 239 stores will remain trading while Deloitte attempts to find a buyer, however trading on HMV shares has now been suspended on the London Stock Exchange. As of this morning, the shop will no longer accept gift vouchers, or issue any more.

Prof. Rod Stoneman from the Huston School of Film and Digital Media at NUI Galway also spoke to Gavin ahead of a lecture series taking place at the university. The School of Humanities at NUIG are hosting a series of three lectures in January, February and March.  The first of the series will be given by Prof Rod Stoneman this coming Wednesday 16th January and is entitled “Film Theory for Television Viewers”. The lectures will be held in Galway City Library on Augustine St and are open to all.

The ever-popular Tommy Fleming returns to Glór later this month and joined Gavin in studio this afternoon. He’s one of Ireland’s biggest selling artists, having recorded duets with such luminaries as Andrea Bocelli, Catherine Jenkins, Leslie Garrett, Hayley Westenra and Dame Kiri Tae Kanawa. Tommy has released eight solo albums, all of which have gone on to achieve platinum and multi-platinum status. He has returned to his more folk traditional roots and put together a collection of emotional songs to make up his new album of 15 new tracks called “Begin”, which he describes as a personal tribute to his beloved Mother and Father who both passed away this year.

Breda McCullough also gave us details on a special fundraising event taking place at the weekend. The Toonagh charity run takes place on Sunday next (20th Jan). There are 3 routes – a 10.5, 5 and 3 kilometre.  Registration is at Toonagh Hall at 11.30 and take off is at 12.30.  All proceeds will be donated to Ennis Simon Community.
