Joining Máire on The Afternoon Show today was Ian Power from SpunOut.ie. A coalition of youth organisations consisting of the National Youth Council of Ireland, the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), Labour Youth, and SpunOut.ie are today calling on the Government to reverse some of the €870m in relief provided to the banking sector in last week’s budget by doubling the yield from the banking levy to €300m. They say it would generate an extra €150m which the Government could use to abandon plans to cut income supports to young unemployed people and medical and social supports to older people. An extra €150m from the banking levy could allow the Government to abandon: €44m in cuts to the telephone allowance for older people, €32m in cuts to income supports for young unemployed people, €72m of the total €149m cuts planned to medical cards and €2m in cuts to youth work.

Carla Timoney of the Gum Litter Task Force also joined the show following a nationwide schools’ campaign to educate and raise student awareness of littering, which visited Ennis this week. Over 200 students from Cloughleigh National School and Ennis Community College participated in the ‘Bin It!’ workshop. The programme has an accompanying website www.gumlittertaskforce.ie and Facebook page www.facebook.com/binityourway.

Molly Muldoon is the Deputy Editor of Irishcentral.com and joined us for a look at some of the news stories that the Irish community in the States are following – such as the increase in Irish Americans buying up property in Ireland and how hurling has been showcased in the home of the Fighting Irish – Notre Dame.

Sharon Meaney, the Manager of the Clare Volunteer Centre was also in studio as people in Clare are being urged to get their nominations for the Volunteer Ireland Awards completed this week, ahead of next Friday’s (October 25th) closing date. Volunteer Ireland and Panadol encouraged families, friends, neighbours, residents and community groups across Ireland to go to www.volunteer.ie and nominate their heroes in Ireland’s major volunteer recognition event. As an added incentive, Volunteer Ireland today announced that one Awards nominee will win a €1,000 bursary for their organisation, as part of a ‘Charity Hero Award’, for lifetime contribution.
