On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show, Rachel Collier, the Co-Founder and Chief Executive of Young Social Innovators, joined Máire Moynahan to talk about how teens across Clare can help solve social problems in their areas. Applications are being called from schools and youth organisations across Clare for Young Social Innovator’s Social Innovators Action Programme 2013/14. The project-based programme gives 15 to 18 year olds opportunity to examine social problems in their communities and bring about the changes they wish to see. The closing date for entries is 30th September 2013. Projects from Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon and Colaiste Muire, Ennis were among the 60 shortlisted for the Annual YSI Showcase and Awards last May. 

 

Michael Carey from Bridgetown is the Chairman of Clare Macra na Feirme  and spoke to Máire on the show about how people across the county can get involved in the organisation.  Michael recently won gold in Macra’s leadership Distinction Awards for the work he’s done with the Clare Macra branch. The awards were held in Ennis – Rose Quinn from Cratloe – Clare Macra Secretary also won a silver distinction award.  If you’d like to join Macra na Feirme or view events that are being hosted by the group in Clare please see www.macra.ie 

 

Bernard Purcell, Editor of The Irish World newspaper in London joined the show and filled us in on all that’s happening across the pond – including Irish designers at London Fashion Week, Michael O’leary and Ryanair’s expansion plans at Stansted and Bob Geldof being honoured with the freedom of London.

 

Siobhan Mulcahy is the Clare Arts Officer and was in studio to let listeners know about the myriad events planned for Culture Night 2013. Culture night takes place this Friday, it’s an annual national event in which cultural providers throughout the county and country stay open late and provide free entertainment and activities for members of the public. Dympna Bonfield  is an Artist and Psychotherapist based in Ennis and spoke to Máire about her work and about her current exhibition at Glor. Dympna has exhibited work both nationally and internationally. After spending many years living and working in Dublin she returned west, to her native Clare. Her latest exhibition – Soul Space is on view at Glor until Saturday 26 October, daily, it’s free of charge and this Friday at 6.30pm there will be a formal launch to coincide with Culture night.
