On today’s show Máire was joined by Donal Minihane from Hotel Doolin to let both budding and established writers know about how they are being invited to submit entries to the second annual Doolin Short Story Competition 2014, as part of the Doolin Writers’ Weekend. Hotel Doolin has confirmed a prize fund of €1,000 will be awarded to the winning entrant, with €600 and €400 prizes for the second and third placed entries respectively. The winning entries, which will be published on the Irish Writers’ website and in The Clare People newspaper, will be announced at the Doolin Writers’ Weekend on 28-30 March. The 2nd annual Doolin Writer’s Weekend will once again feature workshops & readings by some of Ireland’s leading writers, including Claire Keegan, Claire Kilroy, Theo Dorgan and Arlene Hunt. There will also be a publishing workshop with Eoin Purcell from New Island Press and live traditional Irish music sessions hosted by Conor Byrne, as well as a DJ set by music legend Terri Hooley. Aidan Courtney from the Ennis Book Shop was in studio and reviewed “How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia” by Mohsin Hamid, author of The Reluctant Fundamentalist and also “All the Beggars Riding” by Lucy Caldwell.
Niamh Casey is a second year Arts student at NUI Galway and comes from Fanore. Niamh and her friend Alessandra Stella are embarking on an adventure – they are participating in Jailbreak, a charity initiative organized by the Trinity College Law Societies, Saint Vincent De Paul and Amnesty International. Four universities compete with each other to get as far out of the country as possible without using money. Every university is allowed 40 teams of two people.
