On today’s show the issue of problem gambling was discussed. Colin Regan is the GAA Community and Health Manager and joined the show to talk about how the GAA and Gaelic Players Association have released a set of guidelines in the hope of educating members about gambling. As part of the GAA’s work in health and well-being, the Association felt that it was the right time to produce a booklet of guidelines as an educational resource for players, members and clubs. Clare FM’s Kiara Gannon was also out and about asking the people on the streets their views.

Deirdre O’Donnell is the President of Ennis Soroptimists who are celebrating their 50th anniversary in late February. She was in studio with Máire and was accompanied by transition year student at Rice College, Natasha O’Dwyer from Barefield and Killaloe Leaving Certificate student Eimear Lynch from St Anne’s Community College. The groups Public Speaking competition is coming up – it’s an annual event and the girls are given a choice of topics relevant to six categories – human rights, health, education, democracy, empowering women and friendship & volunteering. Natasha’s topic was democracy and Eimear’s was human rights. The girls now go on to the regional final on 9th February in Ennis.  There will be two winners from four other Soroptimist clubs competing that day with the two winners on the day going on to the final in Thurles in March.

Frank Considine is the Chair of Banner Bee Keepers and spoke to the show as they are hosting their 4th annual conference in The Falls in Ennistymon on Sunday next.  The theme is the importance of Irish honey production.
