On today’s programme Georgina Campbell, food writer and Editor of Georgina Campbell’s Ireland talked about how despite being in a fight for survival, the Irish hospitality sector is reportedly blighted by poor service in restaurants and bad beds in hotels. This is the experience of food writer Georgina Campbell, who has been travelling the country inspecting food establishments for her annual food awards and hospitality guides. However, she also said the hospitality sector was finally seeing green shoots of recovery after years of recession.

 

Regina Fitzpatrick is the founding Chair of Oral History Network and an Oral Historian. She joined Máire to talk about how Cuimhneamh an Chlair has launched the ‘Winter of the Cuaird’, their winter collection programme for 2013/14.  The group of volunteers, who have already conducted over 580 interviews with some of Clare’s oldest citizens, are hoping to add to their increasing archive of memories during the winter months, the traditional time for social visiting in the past. Aidan Courtney from The Ennis Book Shop was in studio to review Eamon Dunphy’s autobiography “The Rocky Road” and Johnny Sexton’s “Becoming a Lion”.

 

Singer Songwriter Kieran Goss was also a guest of the show and talked about touring around the world and now coming home to Ireland. Kieran was just nine years old when he got his first guitar. and while a law student in Belfast he supported himself by playing club gigs and the University Students’ Union, earning himself support slots for Elvis Costello, Christy Moore and Joe Jackson along the way. After completing his studies in Northern Ireland he worked as a street musician in Germany, France and New York and as a songwriter for other musicians. He recorded his first album, Brand New Star, in 1989 and has released a further 12 albums – he’s been touring the UK for the past number of weeks and comes West to Glor this Saturday night.

 

Teenagh Cunningham is the General Manager of Baboró International Arts Festival – the 17th annual festival for children starts next Monday – October 14th.  There are two major free events, Pictiúr and The Exploratorium.
