A Clare local election candidate insists the future of a well-known Newmarket-on-Fergus property must be made public to avoid misinformation.

It has emerged that Clare hurling legend Davy Fitzgerald has cleared an outstanding commercial rates bill of €53,000 for his property, the Bellsfort Inn, in the Stonehall area.

The local authority granted a planning permission exemption late last year to turn the pub into a development consisting of five two-bedroom apartments.

In light of speculation as to the building’s future, Newmarket-on-Fergus Fianna Fáil Local Election Candidate David Griffin says locals deserve clarity on what will become of the site.

Clare County Council statement:

The Planning Authority received a notification under Article 10 (6) of the Planning & Development Regulations, 2001, as amended, regarding the conversion of the existing Bellsfort Inn (former public house) to 4 no. apartments.

The drawings included with the notification indicated four separate apartments, complying with the standards as set out in Department Guidelines for Apartments and the provisions of the Regulations.
