The Government has been accused of disregarding Clare’s rural population with the latest excise duty hike.

Since April 1st, the price of a litre of petrol and diesel has increased by 4 cent and 3 cent respectively.

This means 60% of the cost of filling a car is now based on taxes alone, despite the state collecting €3.8bn from the taxpayer on fuel just last year.

Quilty native and Independent local election candidate for West Clare Joseph Woulfe believes the state should invest in environmental solutions rather than driving up the cost of living.
