Hundreds of homes have been left without power in parts of Clare as thunderstorms continue to make their way north over the middle of the county.

The affect areas include Drumquin, Inch, Cahercalla, Ballycar, Clooney, Tulla, Crusheen, Ballinruan, O’Briensbridge and Killaloe. A fault in the Broadford area has already been dealt with.

It’s expected that in most cases, power should be restored by 1.00am.

A number of flights due in Shannon at around 10.30pm this evening were forced to deviate from their tracks and route to locations away from the airport to avoid severe thunderstorm activity.

A Ryanair service from Manchester to Shannon spent around 45 minutes circling over Kerry before making a successful approach and landing at around 11.15pm.

A FedEx cargo flight from Dublin to Shannon entered a holding pattern initially over North Clare and later over the South West of the county. The flight landed safely at 11.28pm after waiting for almost an hour for the weather to clear.

Another Ryanair flight from Fuerteventura routed over North Kerry and completed a single circuit before commencing an approach to Shannon. That flight landed safely at 11.22pm.

Met Éireann had issued a Status Yellow Rain Warning for Clare and later upgraded to a Status Yellow Thunderstorm Warning.

The rain warning will remain in place until 7.00am on Monday while the worst of the thunderstorm activity was expected to have passed by midnight.
