The number of one-off housing starts in Clare reached a new record high last month.

New figures from the Department of Housing show the amount of overall home commencements in this county more than tripled between April and March.

A commencement notice is issued to Clare County Council when a person or business intends to carry out works on a property and are generally regarded as a strong indicator for construction activity.

Last month, 104 commencement notices were issued in Clare, which is more than double the 36 notices issued in March.

Stemming from these notices, works began on 280 houses in this county during April, which is by far the highest total this year and more than a three-fold increase on the 76 home starts the previous month.

Also in April, constructed started on 88 one-off homes in Clare, which is the highest amount recorded in this county since records began in 2014 and an increase of over 166% in the space of a month.

Despite a relative increase in home commencements across the board in April, the number of home starts recorded here was the lowest in Munster and the tenth lowest of any county nationwide.
