30% Increase In Domestic Incidents In Clare

There’s been a 30% increase in “domestic incidents” in the county in the first four months of this year.

This morning’s meeting of Clare’s Joint Policing Committee has also heard that burglary figures between Janaur and April are on a par with last year, while there has been an increase of 19% in drugs for sale or supply.

The 30% increase in domestic incidents includes breaches of barring orders, safety orders and protection orders.

In his update on crime for the year to date in Superintendent Ryan said that drugs for sale or supply has seen an increase of 19%. Superintendent Ryan said that searches in Shannon recently found in excess of €80,000 worth of drugs.

There were 49 detections for driving under the influence this year so far which is the same figure as last year while there has been a 15% decrease in public order offences down from 76 to 66.

There have been 55 burglaries in the county so far this year which is the same figure for the corresponding months in 2022.

Superintendent Ryan said that there have been a series of burglaries on two successive Friday’s in recent weeks, perpetrated by what he called “travelling criminals.”

The incidents happened in areas including Sixmilebridge and Kilkishen.

Thefts from shops in Clare has increased by 28% so far this year. There have been 143 thefts in total, mostly in what are termed larger retail units in Ennis.

What are deemed “other thefts” are up 45%. These thefts include driving off from a filling station without paying for fuel.

Minor assault figures have increased by 18% while sexual offences have seen a 22% decrease down from 18 last year to 14 for this year.

Instances of fraud is down 14%. Superintendent Ryan said that most fraud crimes tend to be when people click on a link or an app.

Detections of speeding is down 11 % while drivers caught for having no insurance is down 34% on last year’s figures to date.
