In a statement, the bank says it recognises ‘the customer and public unease that this has caused’ and that it will retain its 170-branch network in its entirety.

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey was among those to hit out over the move, criticising the bank’s Chief Executive for reneging on the bank’s promise to repay its gratitude for a €20.8 billion taxpayer bailout by supporting the Irish economy and its customers.

He’s been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that through the Financial Regular, the Government should now ensure a suite of bank services for customers.
