Breen welcomes Children’s Referendum

A former Clare TD has welcomed the government’s decision to hold a referendum on children’s rights, saying such a move should have happened years ago.

Then Independent Deputy James Breen was a member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Child Protection which published the agreed wording of a Constitutional amendment on children in February of 2007.  However, the vote was never held.

Now a member of Clare County Council, James Breen says the amendment published by the government yesterday is very similar to what his committee drew up five years ago.

The Kilnamona representative is disappointed it has taken so long for a vote to be held.
