The news that 163 jobs at Element 6 in Shannon are to be saved has been broadly welcomed.

The industrial diamond manufacturer announced yesterday that they had been given the go ahead for the Shannon Sustainability Plan, which means that 243 jobs at the site will be retained.

However, the revised redundancy package on offer has come in for criticism from both workers and public representatives

The new package of two and a half weeks per year of service, which is capped at one year’s salary, is significantly less than workers at the plant recieved a few months.

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey says that work needs to begin to ensure a proper package for the workers that are to lose their jobs
