Burglary In Decline In Clare While Theft Sees A Spike

The number of burglaries recorded by Clare Gardaí has almost halved in recent months compared to the beginning of the year.

New crime data published by the Central Statistics Office points to a decline in break-ins in Clare in a period when theft in various forms has risen.

From the beginning of April to the end of June this year, the most recorded offence in Clare was, as is typically the case, “theft and related offences”.

Across this period, a total of 254 instances of this offence were recorded which was 19% more than the 213 reported to Gardaí between January and March.

Shop theft has seen a similar rise, with the 123 such incidents taking place in Clare in the second quarter of the year indicating at 16% increase from the previous period.

The other most recorded offences in Clare from April to June were public order and other social code offences, 98 of which took place, and damage to property and to the environment which was observed on 95 occasions.

These were followed by attempts or threats to murder, assaults, harassments and related offences, with 94 instances of this wide-ranging offence being recorded by Gardaí.

Notably, burglary is seeing a sharp decline in Clare, with instances of burglary and related offences down from 69 in the first quarter to 36 in the most recent period.

Similarly, the figure for non-aggravated burglary has fallen from 68 to 36, and the data also shows that no aggravated burglary was reported to Clare Gardaí between April and June.

Looking at the national picture, homicide and related offences are down 15%, offences against Government, justice procedures and organisation of crime are down 13%, and sexual offences are down 12%.

At the same time however, burglary and related offences are up 9% nationally while fraud, deception and related offences have seen a jump of 21%.
