A showcase of medieval iron smelting and forging is taking place in North Clare this weekend.

More than 50 blacksmiths and traditional iron smelters from across Ireland, the UK, Europe and the USA are participating in the inaugural Caherconnell International Furnace Festival.

The 1,000-year-old fort at the heart of the Burren, once home to Gaelic Chieftains, is being transformed into an open-air museum as iron is smelted on site.

Colm Bagnel of Bushy Park Ironworks, who is appearing at the event, says people can expect a unique few days in store.
