The Justice Minister is to be asked to facilitate the establishment of a knife amnesty in Ennis.

Ennis Town Council has proposed that the program would involve the deployment of secure bins at a number of sites, including churches and schools, and that people dispatch knives there without fear of punishment.

Councillors envisage that the details would be drawn up by Gardaí, provided Minister Shatter’s office gives the plan the seal of approval.

The amnesty has been suggested by Independent Councillor Paul O’Shea who believes the program could be availed of by criminals and ordinary citizens
