The trial of former Clare GP Pascal Carmody is now expected to proceed next month after he agreed to secure a legal team.

Earlier this week Limerick Circuit Court was told the 63 year old, of Ballycuggeran, Killaloe wanted to represent himself.

Mr Carmody is facing nine charges of obtaining monies under false pretences from families of two terminally ill cancer patients at the East Clinic in Killaloe in 2001-02.

At Limerick Circuit Court last Tuesday Pascal Carmody told Judge Moran that  he had intended to instruct a London Firm to represent him but claimed the company was unable to due to the complexity of the case, which he said was ongoing for 12 years and costing millions in legal fees.  t

Thee court previously heard his long standing solicitor Michael Staines was no longer representing him.

Mr Carmody said he now wanted to represent himself as a lay litigant – however Judge Moran said he would prefer the 63 year old to have a solicitor and a barrister for his own sake .

Today the court was told that that the firm of Frank Buttimer Solicitors had been instructed to represent the former GP.

Council for the state welcomed the move but said it was a matter of great anxiety that the trial proceed as listed next month.

Judge Carroll Moran said  they could act on the assumption that the trial will go head and adjourned the case until next Friday to finalise matters ahead the trial on November 27th.
