A Dublin sailor’s attempt to single-handedly sail a 13-foot dinghy around the entire coastline of Ireland has been called to a halt off the coast of Clare.

Gary ‘Ted’ Sargent, set off from Schull in Cork last week in an effort to 100,000 euro for charity.

His efforts to get to Doonbeg were hampered today after one of the support boats broke down.

Gary Ted Sargent is attempting to single handedly carry out “One Wild Ride” around the coast of Ireland to 100,000 euro for Child Vision.

It’s the only service in Ireland completely dedicated to the education and therapy needs of blind and multi-disabled children.

But the challenge came to an abrupt stop around 11.30 this morning, after one of the support boats broke down.

The 8 metre RIB suffered engine failure and was left drifting at sea.

Kilrush RNLI was dispatched to the scene and two people were rescued from the boat at Kilbaha Bay.

RNLI volunteers took the boat on tow back to the marina in Kilrush where they arrived shortly before 2.30pm.

Ted has thanked Kilrush RNLI for their support today and he says he’s grateful that everyone is safe.

He’s now looking for any offers of RIB support to help get the challenge back on track.

Meanwhile,

The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter has carried out a long range mission to airlift an ill crew member from an Irish fishing vessel off the west coast.

The trawler was about 150kms west of the Aran Islands when the skipper alerted the Irish Coast Guard.

The 54-year-old Spanish fisherman was successfully winched from the deck of the trawler at around 2.00pm and has been flown to University Hospital Galway for treatment for a suspected brain haemorrhage.
