It’s claimed former employees of Moneypoint Power Station could feel “aggrieved” by the announcement that the station is to become a backup electricity supplier.

EirGrid and the ESB have reached an agreement that will see the facility become an out-of-market Generator of Last Resort from 2025 to 2029, meaning it will act as a backup supplier in the event of a supply shortage in the market.

As part of ESB’s commitment to cease coal burning activities at the country’s largest electricity generating station by 2025, the facility will be converted to run on oil for this period, subject to a grant of planning permission, but will be decommissioned no later than 2029.

Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District, Ian Lynch, has been telling Clare FM’s Seán Lyons there are “mixed emotions” following the announcement.
