North East Clare’s Lough Graney will benefit from a €20 million initiative aimed at protecting Ireland’s most pristine river catchments.

The area is one of six in the country to have been included in the EU-funded Waters of LIFE programme which works to combat the decline of Ireland’s ‘high status’ rivers.

Ireland is one of few EU member states that still has a number of high status water bodies, however, the number of remaining sites has declined by 37% between 1987 and 2020.

Some of the key objectives of the Waters of LIFE project up to 2028 include creating a better understanding of what causes a river’s status to change, enhancing public awareness of the ecology of our rivers and developing locally tailored solutions to protect these sites.
