Clare Councillors are set to use their own money to fund an annual award for budding young scientists across the county.

Local representatives have urged Clare County Council to set aside 3,000 euro a year to assist a Clare student in post graduate research which could lead to substantial employment within the county, but with no funds set aside for such a scheme in the Council’s budget, this idea has been referred to the local VEC and Universities.

However, a seperate call for 1,000 euro to be donated to a Clare Young Scientist who identifies a previously undiscovered local resource looks more likely to proceed, after it was suggested that Councillors fund this out of their own pockets.

Lissycasey Fianna Fail Councillor PJ Kelly feels the proposal has merits.
