Clare County Council has been granted approval to apply for a flood relief scheme for Kilkee.

It comes as part of plans from the Government to invest over €123m in flood risk management across the county.

The project approved by the Office of Public Works today will aim to protect 134 properties and 118 residential families impacted by persistent flooding from Victoria Stream.

It will involve the construction of new flood defence walls, embankments, box culverts and open channels combined with a channel diversion and flood water storage areas.

A separate flood relief scheme is currently planned for Kilkee town, which will aim to combat coastal flooding.

According to Minister for the Office of Public Works Kieran O’Donnell, a €5m flood relief scheme for Springfield in Sixmilebridge is nearing completion and will protect 21 properties when it comes to fruition.

The OPW has also confirmed today that a planning application for a flood relief scheme in Shannon Town is expected in the first half of 2025.

Clare County Council is also preparing tenders for technical engineering and environmental services to develop schemes for Bunratty and Kilrush.

The Government claims its investing some €120m to manage the flood risk across Clare, while the OPW has approved an additional €3.8m for localised flood relief works across 42 other locations in the county.
